If you are a student in tax, or a tax preparer/practitioner looking at a career in accounting or the tax preparation business, you soon come to the realization that tax preparation is not just about preparing personal tax returns in many cases. There is another substantial tax regime that you need to be well versed in, and that’s the Goods & Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).
When it comes to advising and preparing tax returns for small business, the two go hand in hand. You likely will not be preparing corporate or personal tax returns, without the corresponding GST/HST return.
The GST/HST fundamentals course provides you with the essential knowledge you need to be comfortable when dealing with GST/HST matters. It is jam packed not only with the must-know, critical rules and concepts, but also the real world practical insights to help you navigate and apply those complex tax rules. We’ll tell you what you need to know so that you don’t get caught in the CRA’s web.
Remember, text books and theory taught to you in a college and university course are great, but you need to reinforce that information with real world examples on how to apply those concepts. The real world won’t give you a problem that fits nicely on a sheet of paper. And you won’t be able to solve the it by writing an answer down on another sheet of paper. You’ll have to fill out prescribed forms, file specific documents by certain deadlines and communicate with real people. This course bridges that gap.
How do we do this? Well quite simple, I’ll explain the concept, and then move on to show you examples from actual books and records of small businesses. We’ll fill out the actual forms, look at the actual correspondence you will receive from the CRA and how to make sure this all flows smoothly in your practice.
How about accounting and bookkeeping for GST/HST related transactions? This is a very important part of any practice that is normally not taught in any college or university program on the GST/HST. I’ll show you the best practices that, many cases, can mean the difference between spending hours on a file or just minutes. The course teaches you the approach and blueprint to use to set up the accounting system and accounts that will make your practice run a lot smoother.
As we know anytime we talk about tax, things can get a little bit complicated. Inevitably at some point, a practitioner will have to deal with the CRA on GST/HST issues. This course also focuses on what to expect from the CRA when things go wrong. We’ll go through actual correspondence small businesses receive and how to deal with them. But, most importantly, I’ll teach you what to look out for and what you can do to avoid getting into those situations in the first place. Or at the very least, know what to expect and how to deal with CRA auditors.
Finally, this course is great for those of you who consult with small business and field a number of questions you’ll inevitable encounter on a daily basis. I’ll show you what to expect from your clients and how to answer or get the information you need to be much more than just a tax preparer, but a valuable business consultant. Ultimately, that is what clients want from their professional.
