This course is the only one of its kind. Finally, a resource on the Canada-United States tax treaty that demonstrates how to practically apply the treaty when preparing tax returns. The tax treaty bridges the gap between each country's tax system and cuts through the burdensome tax rules to provide clear rules on how to report cross border income.

This course will show you how to apply these rules so that you can not only maximize, but also simplify your tax filings.

Forget what you know about the traditional rules of preparing a tax return. The tax treaty is the go-to rule book for reporting cross border income and it may fly in the face of every tax rule you have been taught to date. The course does require good knowledge of personal tax concepts for either the Canadian or United States tax system to understand the terms being applied.

This course goes into detail of how to report specific types of cross border income to maximize the tax return. The objective of the course is to expand your knowledge as you make the move towards preparing returns with cross border implications and preparing returns on both side of the border.

The course is perfect for accountants, cross border investment advisors and cross border legal experts who provide advice or prepare tax returns for clients with cross border issues. This course takes a practical approach to teaching the material. You’ll be able to look over Mark's shoulder as he takes you through real world examples. He’ll also explain the tax treaty in terms you’ll understand.

First, the course introduces the concept of the Canada – United States tax Treaty and the important concepts to understand entering the course.

Second, the course breaks down the most applied tax treaty articles, explains the articles in detail in an easier to understand method than what is provided by the government, and then demonstrates how to report the income and the treaty positions on the Canadian and US tax returns.

Lastly, the course goes into further discussion of topics that will come up with your clients and how to best prepare for those discussions. Sample letters are also provided to assist with your future tax filings.

Recommended prerequisites: A working knowledge of Canadian personal tax or US personal tax. It is recommended that you are at least familiar with the core concepts covered in the Personal Income Tax Returns - Introductory Course
